Questions about The Knitting App

A knitting pattern tracker and row counter for people who knit from PDF and printed patterns. Here is what it does, what it costs and who it suits.

The app

What is The Knitting App?

The Knitting App turns a knitting pattern PDF, a photo of a printed page or a Google Docs link into rows in your size that you tick off as you knit. It remembers your place on every row, keeps counters, a timer and notes under the pattern, and holds your yarn stash, wishlist, swatches and finished projects in one place.

What is the best app for knitting from patterns?

If you knit from PDF or printed patterns, The Knitting App is built for exactly that. Instead of zooming around a PDF with a highlighter, you get the pattern as a list of rows written out for your size, and you tick each one off. Close the app mid-row, come back a week later on another device, and it opens where you stopped.

How is it different from other knitting apps?

Most knitting apps give you a row counter, or a PDF viewer where you move a marker along the page yourself. The Knitting App reads the pattern for you: it splits it into sections and rows, picks out your size from numbers like 96 (110, 124) so you only see yours, and keeps the pattern's own abbreviations a tap away. The counter, timer and notes sit under the row you are on, so nothing lives on a separate screen.

Following a pattern

Does it work with multi-size patterns?

Yes. Pick your size when you start a project and every row shows only your numbers. A line like cast on 96 (110, 124) sts reads cast on 110 sts if you are knitting the middle size. You can check the printed page any time.

Can I use a printed pattern or a pattern from a book?

Yes. Take a photo of each page and import it the same way as a PDF. Your patterns stay private to your account.

Does it have a row counter?

Yes. Tap plus at the end of each row, set a target so it shows 5 of 8, and add as many counters as the project needs, for example one for rows and one for cable crossings. Counters are saved with the project and sync between your devices.

Can it keep my place in a knitting chart?

Yes. The chart tracker puts a line across the chart that moves up a row each time you tap Next, with Back and Undo if you tap too far. It remembers your zoom and your place.

Will it remember where I left off?

Yes. Every ticked row, counter and note is saved to your account as you go, so you can knit on your phone, check the next row on a tablet and pick up later on a computer.

Does it work with Ravelry?

Yes. Connect your Ravelry account to bring in patterns from your Ravelry library, and search Ravelry by describing what you want to make, such as an easy chunky cardigan for a toddler, free. The app turns that into real Ravelry filters for you. The Knitting App is not made by Ravelry.

Is it good for beginners?

Yes. You see one row at a time in your size, with the pattern's own abbreviations explained a tap away, so there is less to hold in your head. Experienced knitters use it for the same reason on big multi-size or charted projects.

Yarn and projects

Can I track my yarn stash?

Yes. Add yarn by scanning the ball band barcode or by hand, with photos. The stash is sorted by weight, the wishlist keeps yarn for future projects, and Maker can match a pattern's yarn against what you already own. There is also a swatch library, a gallery of finished projects and stats on how much you have knitted.

Price, devices and privacy

How much does The Knitting App cost?

It is free to join, with no card needed. Free includes 3 pattern imports, 3 projects on the needles at a time, the full pattern reader and row tracker, 1 photo per project, your yarn stash, the barcode scanner and Ravelry.

Maker costs £4.99 a month or £39 a year on the website and adds 10 pattern imports every month, unlimited projects and photos, swatches, the wishlist, the gallery, knitting stats and stash matching. In the iPhone and Android apps the store shows its own price.

Which devices does it work on?

It works in the browser on any phone, tablet or computer at theknittingapp.com. Apps for iPhone, iPad and Android are on the way, and one account works on all of them.

Are there ads or notifications?

No. There are no ads, no streaks and no reminders. The app is there when you pick up your needles and quiet when you put them down.

Can I get my data out?

Yes. Download a ZIP of your patterns, projects, photos and settings any time from your account, and delete your account in the app if you want everything gone.
